about
"A genius" - Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote)
"An icon of the Australian scene" - Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio)
He’s back! Lachlan Mitchell aka Laneous (of funk group Kafka + Laneous & The Family Yah) has announced his solo debut in the form of single ‘Modern Romance’. His own nuanced take on 21st century courting and commitment, ‘Modern Romance’ comes double barrel with an accompanying clip starring Gyton Grantley (Underbelly) that features everything from yogis, cellos, a juggalo, steaks, bandages, chains and a cucumber.
Written and recorded with his own superb musical romance the track features producer and bassist, Paul Bender, keyboardist, Simon Mavin (both of Grammy nominated Hiatus Kaiyote and Swooping Duck), Donny Stewart on vibraphone and Hudson Whitlock (The Cactus Channel) on drums. It’s classic Laneous; raw but smooth, honey vocals, vintage charm, modern snap and incomparable melodic sensibility.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
